I love a story that I can sink into, the kind where the individual words on the page disappear because I have become so caught up in the scene.
I love a mystery that I haven’t figured out by page 100—especially if the clues were there all along.
I love a story that makes me laugh, not at someone, but at the ridiculousness of the situation, or at a perfectly timed comment.
And when I’m in the right mood, I love a story that makes me cry.
As a teenager, I wondered why I loved the movie The Dead Poets’ Society. It had some funny moments, and some inspiring ones. But it also made me cry. Every time. It took me a while to realize that I loved it in part, because it made me cry. My tears were proof that I connected with the characters. They had become real to me.
So what about you? Do you sometimes enjoy a story that makes you cry? What are your favorites?
